Does Chewing Gum Really Prevent Cavities?

chewing gum fights cavities and tooth decayIt is advertised on TV, the radio, and in magazines that chewing gum can help fight cavities – but does it really? Most people chew gum because they like the taste, it is a habit, they are trying to quit smoking, or they are trying to mask bad breath from a potent meal. However, it is encouraging to know that in fact, chewing gum fights cavities and tooth decay. It is important to choose your gum wisely because not all gum is created equal, but by making a knowledgeable choice you can help to protect your teeth and gums.

Chewing gum helps to produce an extra amount of saliva inside the mouth. This extra saliva helps to cleanse the mouth of bacteria causing acids that can destroy the teeth. Chewing gum can also help those who suffer from dry mouth because it can increase the amount of saliva that your mouth is capable of producing. A dry mouth can lead to a quick onset of dental decay because bacteria are allowed to remain in the mouth and do their damage more quickly. By helping to produce a larger amount of saliva, you can help to keep cavities and decay at bay.

Chewing gum is also known to help loosen and remove plaque buildup from the teeth. Plaque is the sticky, white substance that forms on the teeth each day from the foods and beverages that we consume. When plaque is not removed by frequent brushing and daily flossing, demineralization of the tooth enamel occurs and cavities can quickly develop. Chewing gum with Xylitol will also help to kill the types of bacteria that grow inside the mouth. By killing these bacteria, you are much less likely to develop cavities or decay at the gum line.

Not all chewing gum is created equal, though, and it is important to remember that sugars damage the teeth. Gums that consist of natural sweeteners will not be beneficial to killing bacteria – they will only encourage more bacteria to thrive and produce higher amounts of acid. Sugar-free chewing gum is the best choice to help you fight cavities. Remember that chewing gum fights cavities and tooth decay.  At Family & Cosmetic Dental Care in Johns Creek we can help you make the most educated choice for what type of gum to chew in order to protect your smile!
