Very few people would admit to not caring for or about their teeth, yet many people neglect the health of their teeth on a daily basis. Good oral hygiene can help everyone avoid cavities and tooth decay, and good simple habits can go a long way in cavity prevention and protecting teeth over a lifetime.
Brush and Floss Your Teeth Daily. There are two things that everyone can do on a daily basis to help promote a healthy mouth and prevent cavities. Brushing and flossing the teeth at least twice a day help to rid the mouth of food particles and bacteria. Brushing the teeth brushes away plaque that forms on the surfaces of the teeth, and flossing helps to remove small food particles and plaque that becomes trapped in the tight spaces between the teeth. Without these daily tasks, the teeth become covered in plaque and tartar – both of which are full of damaging bacteria that cause cavities and decay in a short amount of time.
Rinse Your Mouth. After eating it is important to give your mouth a quick rinse with water or a mouthwash if you cannot brush and floss. This quick step will help to loosen any food particles that have become trapped in the teeth.
Visit the Dentist Regularly. It may be easy to miss or put off your bi-annual dental appointment, but doing so puts you at a much higher risk for cavities and other dental health issues. Visiting the dentist regularly can help prevent problems or spot them early for a timely intervention.
Ask for Dental Sealants. Dental sealants are one of the easiest ways to prevent cavities and tooth decay in the back molars. These teeth have many grooves and pits where cavities are prevalent, and having them sealed will help to avoid cavities.
Maintain a Healthy Diet. You are what you eat goes farther than just your weight. High sugary foods, acidic foods, foods that get stuck in the grooves or pits of the teeth, and soft drinks all have negative impacts on the health of your teeth. To maintain a healthy mouth you must start with a healthy diet.
