When surveyed, most people admit that they do not floss as regularly as they should. When asked why they do not floss, the answer is that they just do not like to do it. Dentists understand that proper oral hygiene is a chore, but they also understand that it is a chore worth doing. In fact, anything that is good for you requires discipline and effort, so go ahead and make up your mind that dental flossing your teeth on a daily basis is something that you are going to be committed to.
A shocking fact that many people are unaware of is that flossing is actually considered more important than brushing. Your tongue, cheeks, and saliva naturally rid the teeth of bacteria and food particles throughout the day. And while they do need the assistance of a toothbrush to get them squeaky clean (not to mention freshen your breath!), brushing the teeth is second in line of importance. Dental flossing the teeth is essential to maintaining proper oral health and preventing the teeth and gums from becoming infected. Tiny food particles are lodged in between the teeth every time you eat. Brushing helps to brush away the naturally occurring bacteria that form in the mouth to break down food particles, but the bristles of the toothbrush are not designed to go between the teeth.
Floss is a dental tool that is specifically designed to squeeze between the tight spots of the teeth and remove plaque that builds up. Plaque is formed by the aforementioned bacteria breaking down the food particles and then lingering in between the teeth. Plaque is a very dangerous substance and can quickly have devastating affects if it is not removed. Gum disease and tooth loss are the most common concerns that are directly associated with failure to floss.
The next time you look at your floss container and think, “I just don’t want to do it.” Stop and ask yourself, “How much do you enjoy your teeth?” Dental flossing is a chore than can quickly become a habit. It takes between 1-2 minutes, but that short amount of time can add years to your teeth.
