According to a study done by the American Dental Association, men are considerably less likely to visit the dentist for preventive measures than women. In honor of Father’s Day, Family & Cosmetic Dental Care wants to let you know how important it is for everyone – men included – to have preventive dental cleanings and check ups. Research has proven that neglecting one’s oral health can have serious negative effects on one’s overall general health. Whether men are not visiting the dentist is because they are busier, more complacent, or just forget to make an appointment is not clear; however, what is clear is that men’s oral health is compromised at a higher level because many men do not seek preventive dental care.
Not visiting the dentist for preventive oral healthcare can have a host of ill side effects. One of the most common is periodontal disease, or gum disease. Gum disease is a rapid-growing disease that can quickly produce irreversible damage to the mouth. Periodontal disease is caused by a buildup of plaque on the teeth. Plaque is made up of thousands of bacteria that release acid and attack the enamel of the teeth. When plaque is not professionally removed at regular dental cleanings and checkups, it eats away at the gums and enamel until the teeth are no longer secure in the mouth. Lost teeth are a common effect of gum disease, and lost teeth cause a host of other issues that can negatively affect the mouth.
Preventive dental cleanings and checkups are essential to optimal oral health, in both men and women. Brushing the teeth at least twice a day, flossing daily, eating a healthy diet, and visiting the dentist on a regular basis are all essential elements of proper oral health. Making your dental health a priority may take a little bit of extra effort, but in all honestly, visiting the dentist’s office twice a year really is not that difficult. Men’s oral health is so important to one’s overall well being so Family & Cosmetic Dental Care encourages all the men out there to take care of their teeth.
We welcome the opportunity to serve you and to help you achieve optimal oral health.
