What Happens When You Don’t Brush Your Teeth?

what happens when you don't brush your teeth

What happens when you don’t brush your teeth?  Dentists hear all kind of excuses for why patients choose not to brush their teeth as often as they should. Anything from staying up too late and being too tired to brush, to simply using mouthwash to clean the mouth, or even patients not placing value on brushing their teeth. Sure, the American Dental Association advocates brushing the teeth twice a day, but they are just paid to say that. Right?

No. The mouth is an ideal environment for harboring and growing bacteria. In fact, over 600 types of bacteria have been found in the human mouth. While some bacteria in the mouth is a necessary and natural occurrence, a substantial amount of mouth bacteria can do a substantial amount of damage to the teeth. When people do not brush their teeth a coating of bacterial film, known as plaque, begins to grow on the teeth. Plaque produces acids that eat away at the enamel of the teeth causing cavities to form. When plaque continues to sit on the teeth without being properly removed by regular brushing, it gets harder and harder and begins to form tartar. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums brought about by the uncontrolled growth of plaque and tartar. Unchecked gingivitis and plaque growth leads to swollen gums, very bad breath, discolored teeth, abscesses, and eventually tooth loss. Adding in the fact that the mouth is full of living tissues, these infections in the mouth are easily passed through the bloodstream to the heart, lungs, and even the brain. Many diseases are linked to gum disease and tooth decay, so this is no small matter.
